Titled “Pension Funds in the Crosshairs – Balancing Growth, Accountability, and Ethical Investing in a Volatile World”, this dynamic panel discussion will confront the most urgent dilemmas facing Africa’s pension funds today.
With trillions of dollars under management, pension funds are no longer passive players—they are powerful institutions shaping economies, influencing markets, and impacting lives. But this influence comes with weighty questions: Should funds chase returns at all costs? How do they balance fiduciary responsibility with ethical obligations? What does accountability look like in a high-stakes, uncertain global economy?
These are the themes that a powerhouse panel will unpack during this much-anticipated session.
Sydney Sekese, Senior Investment Specialist at Old Mutual Corporate South Africa, says the industry needs to shift its lens. “The time has come for African pension funds to redefine success—not just in terms of performance, but in the value we bring to members and society. Our investment decisions must reflect long-term thinking, sustainability, and stewardship.”
Tsitsi Mutasa, Managing Partner at Governance Advisory Services – Africa Impact Practice, will challenge attendees to consider governance as a cornerstone of resilience. “Without robust governance, even the best-performing funds are vulnerable. Ethical investing and transparency are no longer optional—they are strategic necessities.”

From a capital markets perspective, Nicholas Kabaso, CEO of the Lusaka Securities Exchange, highlights the importance of alignment. “Pension funds have the potential to drive capital into transformative sectors—green infrastructure, SMEs, technology. But this requires a bold commitment to ethical frameworks and intelligent regulation.”
Adding a commercial lens, Benard Odote, Group CEO & MD at House of Procurement, Kenya, underscores the balancing act required by today’s fund leaders. “We’re operating in a climate where inflation is high, compliance burdens are growing, and member expectations are rising. The challenge is finding that sweet spot where growth, governance and impact intersect.”

The session promises an unfiltered, solutions-focused conversation that will resonate with fund trustees, investment officers, regulators and board members alike.
Held against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean, the Pan African Summit on Pension Funds Governance & Awards 2025 offers more than just a beautiful setting—it delivers substance, strategy, and unmatched executive networking.
